How the Distances Are Measured

All figures are approximate road distances to Sawai Madhopur town, which is the practical arrival point for every visitor. The safari gates sit a further 5 to 12 km out depending on the zone, and hotels on Ranthambore Road are between the town and the gates. Driving times assume normal daytime traffic and a short tea stop. Add an hour if you are leaving Delhi, Jaipur or Ahmedabad in the evening rush, and allow more in monsoon or fog.

Train Usually Beats the Road

Sawai Madhopur is a junction on the Delhi to Mumbai trunk line, so for Delhi, Agra, Kota, Mumbai, Vadodara and Indore the train is faster, cheaper and safer than a long drive, and it delivers you 10 km from the hotel. From Jaipur the road is only 3 to 3.5 hours, so a car is simpler unless you prefer the short train hop. From Udaipur and Ahmedabad, the road runs through Chittorgarh and Bundi and makes a good two-day drive with a stop.

Flying In

Jaipur is the nearest commercial airport, roughly 3 to 3.5 hours by road from the park. Travellers from Bangalore, Hyderabad, Pune, Kolkata and abroad usually fly to Jaipur and take a car, or fly to Delhi and continue by train. We arrange the airport pickup so the car is waiting at arrivals, which matters if you are aiming for the same-day evening safari.

Distance and Safari Timing

Morning safaris report at the gate from about 6:00 AM in winter and earlier in summer, so a same-day arrival never works for the morning slot. Plan the drive or train so you reach Sawai Madhopur by late afternoon, sleep, and take the morning safari next day. From Jaipur, an early start does allow the evening safari on the day you arrive. From Delhi, the practical pattern is a morning train and the evening safari.

Reading the Route Notes

Where the table says "road via" a town, that is the route most drivers take and where a lunch or fuel stop makes sense. Bundi and Chittorgarh are worth an hour if you are coming from Udaipur. From Delhi the choice is between the Jaipur highway and then Tonk, or the Mathura and Dausa route; both take a similar time and the highway route has better food stops. Ask us for a driver if you would rather not plan it.

What to Confirm Before You Set Off

Check your safari slot and permit time, because that decides how late you can arrive. Confirm the hotel pickup point if you are coming by train, since the station has two sides. In monsoon and winter fog, add buffer. If you are driving your own car, most hotels have parking but you cannot take a private vehicle inside the park; safaris use registered jeeps and canters only.
