What Is Open in July, August and September

The core zones 1 to 5 are closed from 1 July to 30 September. Buffer zones 6 to 10 have been reported open for safaris in recent monsoon seasons, subject to rain and the current notification. The fort and the Trinetra Ganesh temple are outside the safari system and are generally open to visitors, though the road and steps can be slippery, so confirm before you go.

What the Monsoon Landscape Is Like

The park turns intensely green and the lakes fill. It is spectacular and almost empty of visitors. Temperatures are about 25 to 36°C, humid, with heavy rain on some days. Tall grass and thick leaf cover make tigers much harder to see than in the dry months.

Should You Visit in the Monsoon?

If your aim is a tiger, wait for October or choose April to June. If your aim is scenery, photography of green landscapes, the fort or a quiet short break, the monsoon has real appeal and hotels are at their cheapest. Keep expectations modest and allow for a cancelled drive after heavy rain.

Booking and Cancellation in the Monsoon

Buffer-zone permits depend on the forest department notification, and routes can close at short notice. Do not pay for a non-refundable stay until you have confirmed the safari position with us. We check the current notification before we take any request forward.

When the Park Reopens

The core zones reopen on 1 October. The forest is still green and the lakes full, and permits for October to December were released on 1 August. See our October page for what to expect.

What to Pack for the Monsoon

A light rain jacket or poncho, quick-dry clothes, closed shoes with grip, insect repellent and waterproof covers for cameras and phones. An umbrella is not practical in an open vehicle.
