Taj Sawai Madhopur Lodge
Taj Sawai Madhopur Lodge is a 1930s hunting lodge once used by the Jaipur royal family, now run by the Taj group, set in large lawns in Sawai Madhopur town. It is the heritage option closest to the railway station. We do not run the lodge; we help its guests with safari permits and pickup.
The lodge is in Sawai Madhopur town, which makes it the easiest heritage stay to reach from the railway station and the most convenient if you arrive late or leave early by train. The trade-off is that the park gates are further away than from Ranthambore Road or Sherpur, so the morning pickup is earlier by roughly a quarter of an hour. This is a routine run for us. For outer zones the gate may be further still, and we set the time once the zone is allocated.
The main building is a low colonial-era lodge with verandas, and rooms are spread between the original structure and later wings around the lawns. The grounds are the attraction: mature trees, open grass and a pool, with the feel of an estate rather than a resort. Rooms vary in size and character between the old and newer parts, so ask which you are being offered. Confirm the current tariff and inclusions at the time of booking.
Families and older travellers who want space, a lawn and a settled, unhurried base do well here. It suits guests arriving by train who do not want a long transfer after a journey, and anyone who values the history of the building. It is not the closest stay to the gates, so photographers chasing the earliest possible departure may prefer the Sherpur side. Guests who want a wilderness feel should look at the tented camps instead.
We collect guests from the porch at the time sent the evening before, which for a morning slot will be well before dawn because of the town location. The vehicle drives out along Ranthambore Road to the allocated gate, the guide handles entry with the ID on the permit, and the same vehicle returns you for a late breakfast. The lodge also arranges safaris through its own desk; tell us if that is already done so we do not duplicate the slot.
Meals are in the lodge dining room or on the lawns in winter. Being in town, there are simple restaurants and shops within a short drive, which is useful for a longer stay or for buying anything you forgot. Evenings on the lawn are quiet. Ask about early breakfast or a packed box for the morning safari, and whether lunch can be timed around the gap between slots.
Fix your dates, let us apply for permits, then confirm the room once the forest department issues them. Because the lodge is near the station, it pairs well with train itineraries from Delhi, Jaipur or Mumbai; tell us your train timings and we will plan the safari slots around them.
