Ranthambore zone 7

Ranthambore Zone 7: Chidikho

Zone 7 is Chidikho, a small buffer zone with a handful of waterholes and far fewer vehicles than the core. It adjoins zone 8 (Balas) and shares its tigers with it, with a few resident tigers reported in recent seasons, some of them linked to the line of T-8 Ladli. This page covers what a zone 7 drive is like, which gate it uses and how we request it.

Landscape and Route

Chidikho is compact. The route runs through mixed dry forest and low hills with spots such as Jamoda, Kushalipura and Rajbagh Naka, and it is built around a small number of waterholes rather than a long loop. Because the zone is small, drivers can revisit the same water two or three times in a slot, which is a different rhythm from the core: less driving, more waiting. The forest is quieter and the tracks are narrower, and you will often go the whole drive without seeing another vehicle.

Entry Gate and Drive Time From Hotels

Zone 7 enters from the buffer side of the park, away from the Sherpur gates, through an entry it shares with zone 8. Gate arrangements for the buffer zones are set by the forest department and have been adjusted over the years, so we confirm the exact point when the permit issues. From most Ranthambore Road hotels allow around 30 to 45 minutes, which means an earlier pickup than a core zone. We add the margin ourselves; you only need to be ready.

Tigers and Other Wildlife

Zone 7 has a few resident tigers reported in recent seasons, shared with Balas next door. Some guides link them to the descendants of T-8 Ladli, who held this side for years, but we would not put a name on any of them without checking the latest reports. Sightings are less frequent than in the core, and when they happen they are often at a waterhole with no other jeep around. Sambar, chital, nilgai, langur and a good range of forest birds are regular, and sloth bear is reported on the rocky patches.

Best Season and Slot

Zone 7 is a buffer zone and has been kept open in the monsoon in recent seasons, while core zones 1 to 5 close from 1 July to 30 September. October to March is comfortable and green. April to June is the time the small waterholes matter most, and a quiet wait at one can pay off. Morning and evening slots both run; we lean towards evening in summer, when animals come to water late, and morning in winter for the cool and the calls.

Jeep or Canter Suitability

Zone 7 is a jeep zone in practice. The tracks are narrow and the zone is small, and the whole point is to wait quietly at water, which a six-seat jeep does far better than a twenty-seat canter. Canters are not always allotted to this zone; if you are set on a canter, ask us and we will check what is permitted for your date. For a couple, a photographer or a small family that wants an empty forest, a zone 7 jeep is a good choice.

How to Request Zone 7

Put zone 7 on your booking request and we will apply for it. Zone allocation is by the forest department permit system and cannot be guaranteed, but zone 7 is rarely oversubscribed, so it is one of the easier requests to get. It suits a second or third safari after a core zone, or a monsoon visit when the core is shut. We will be straight with you about the sighting odds, which are lower than the lakes but come with a much quieter forest.
