Ranthambore zone 8

Ranthambore Zone 8: Balas

Zone 8 is Balas, a hilly buffer zone adjoining zone 7 on the outer side of the park. It is one of the quietest zones in Ranthambore, with rocky ridges, dry nallas and very few vehicles. Tigers are shared with Chidikho and reported rather than regular. This page explains the terrain, the gate and drive, and when a Balas permit makes sense.

Landscape and Route

Balas is hill country. The track climbs over rocky ridges and drops into dry nallas through places such as Kherai, Kali, Neemli Dang, Bhat and Mahakho, with long views from the higher points across the outer reserve. There is less water than in zone 7 and the forest is more open and scrubby on the ridges, thicker in the folds. It feels remote, and it is: the route runs along the edge of the tourism area with village land and the wider reserve beyond. Vehicles are few and the silence is part of the appeal.

Entry Gate and Drive Time From Hotels

Zone 8 shares its buffer-side entry with zone 7, away from the Sherpur gates that serve the core. The forest department sets the gate and has adjusted buffer arrangements over the years, so we confirm the exact entry when your permit issues. From the Ranthambore Road hotels allow roughly 30 to 45 minutes, so pickup is earlier than for a core zone. We build that into the time we give you; being ready on time is all we ask.

Tigers and Other Wildlife

Balas shares a few tigers with Chidikho, and sightings are reported rather than routine. A tiger here is usually seen on a track or at one of the scattered waterholes, and with so few vehicles it will often be yours alone. We do not attach names without checking recent reports. The zone is good for sambar, nilgai and chinkara on the open ridges, sloth bear on the rocky slopes, and raptors along the escarpments. It is a zone for people who enjoy the landscape and the quiet as much as the tick.

Best Season and Slot

As a buffer zone, zone 8 has been kept open in the monsoon in recent seasons, while core zones 1 to 5 close from 1 July to 30 September. The hills are at their best from October to February, green and cool with clear views. Summer is hot on the exposed ridges and the little water there is becomes the focus. Morning is our usual suggestion in every season because of the heat on the rock later in the day; winter evenings give fine light across the hills.

Jeep or Canter Suitability

Zone 8 is best done in a jeep. The climbs and rocky sections are rough, the tracks are narrow, and a canter is not always allotted to this zone; if you want one, ask and we will check what is permitted for your date. A jeep copes with the terrain, gets to the viewpoints and lets you wait at water without a crowd. It suits a couple, a photographer interested in landscape, or a small group on a second or third safari.

How to Request Zone 8

Ask for zone 8 on your booking request and we will apply for it. Allocation is by the forest department permit system and is never guaranteed, but zone 8 is seldom oversubscribed and is one of the easier requests. It is a sensible pick for a monsoon safari or as the quiet drive alongside a busier core zone. We will tell you honestly that the sighting odds are lower than the lakes, and equally honestly that the forest is emptier and the hills are worth seeing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which gate is used for Ranthambore zone 8?

A buffer-side entry shared with zone 7, away from the Sherpur gates. The forest department sets and sometimes changes it, so we confirm the gate when your permit issues.

Is zone 8 good for tiger sighting?

Tigers are reported here but less often than in the core zones. It is a quiet, scenic drive with a chance of a tiger, not a high-frequency sighting zone.

What is the difference between zone 7 and zone 8?

They adjoin and share a gate and tigers. Zone 7 (Chidikho) is smaller and built around waterholes; zone 8 (Balas) is hillier, more open and has less water.

Is zone 8 crowded?

No. It is among the least visited zones in the park and you may have the whole drive to yourself.

Is zone 8 open in the monsoon?

It has been kept open from July to September in recent seasons, unlike core zones 1 to 5. Check with us for the arrangement on your dates.
