Khem Villas Ranthambore
Khem Villas is an eco-lodge at Sherpur on the park side of Ranthambore, run by a local family with a long involvement in conservation. It offers tents, cottages and rooms on land that has been allowed to grow back into scrub and wetland. We help its guests with safari permits and pickup; the lodge is not ours.
Sherpur is on the park side of Ranthambore, so the lodge is a short drive from the core-zone gates and away from the resort strip. That makes the pre-dawn start for the morning slot comfortable. Outer-zone gates are further around the park; we set the pickup time once the forest department allocates your zone. The lodge grounds themselves attract birds and small wildlife, which is part of the appeal for guests who want to see something between drives.
There are three kinds of accommodation: tents with proper bathrooms, standalone stone cottages, and rooms in the main building. All sit in grounds that have been deliberately left wild, with ponds and native trees rather than lawns. The cottages give the most privacy; the rooms are the simplest and usually the lowest tariff. There is a pool. Ask which type you are being offered and confirm the current tariff and what meals are included at the time of booking.
Guests who care about the natural setting, enjoy birdwatching, and prefer a lodge run by people who live here will feel at home. It suits couples, families with children who like the outdoors, and older travellers who want quiet. The kitchen is known for home-style cooking and a largely vegetarian menu, which is worth knowing before you book if that matters to your party. Guests who want a large resort with a busy bar will be better served on Ranthambore Road.
We collect guests from the lodge entrance at the time sent the evening before. The vehicle takes you to the allocated gate, the guide handles entry with the ID on the permit, and the same jeep returns you after the drive. The lodge also arranges safaris for its guests and has naturalists of its own; tell us if that is already in hand so we limit our role to anything extra rather than booking the same slot twice.
Meals are served in the main house or outdoors, with a set menu built around fresh produce. Evenings are quiet, with a fire in winter and little else, which is what most guests come for. There are no restaurants within walking distance, so plan to eat at the lodge. Ask about early breakfast for the morning safari and any dietary needs; the kitchen is used to handling them if told in advance.
Hold the tent or cottage and let us apply for permits at the same time, then confirm both once the permits are issued. Winter weekends fill early. Confirm the accommodation type, the current tariff and what meals are included, and whether the lodge closes for any part of the monsoon. Check cancellation terms against the risk of permits not being allocated. Ask about station transfers, the menu if anyone needs non-vegetarian food, and whether the lodge prefers guests to use its own safari vehicles. Match the ID on the permit to the one you will carry.
