October to November: Reopening and Fresh Forest

The park reopens on 1 October after the monsoon with the forest at its greenest and water everywhere, which makes wildlife harder to spot but the scenery at its best. Days are still warm in early October and become pleasant by November. Diwali week brings heavy demand for permits and hotels. Migratory birds begin arriving at the lakes and at Surwal Lake outside the park.

December to February: Cool Peak Season

These are the most comfortable months and the busiest. Mornings are genuinely cold, with fog on the lakes in December and January and open-vehicle wind chill, so carry a jacket, cap and gloves for the first hour. Tigers bask in the sun on rocks and tracks by mid-morning. Christmas and New Year sell out early; February is quieter and equally pleasant.

March to April: Warming Up, Sightings Improve

Temperatures climb through March and the forest dries and thins, which improves visibility. Holi week is busy with domestic travellers. By April the heat is real, with afternoons near 40°C, and animals start to concentrate around the lakes and water holes. Evening safaris become more productive as tigers come down to drink.

May to June: Hottest Months, Best Odds

May and June bring 42 to 44°C afternoons and the highest tiger sighting rates of the year, because water is scarce and the cats stay near it. Morning safaris start very early, evening safaris are hot until the last hour. Carry two litres of water per person, cover your head and arms, and do not bring very young children on the evening drive. The park closes for the season on 30 June.

July to September: Monsoon and Buffer Zones

The core zones 1 to 5 close from 1 July to 30 September. In recent seasons the forest department has kept buffer zones 6 to 10 open for safaris during the monsoon, though routes can shut at short notice after heavy rain. Check with us before travelling. The landscape is spectacular and the park is almost empty, but sightings are harder in the tall grass.

Choosing Your Month

For comfort choose November to February. For the best chance of a tiger choose April to June and accept the heat. For photography choose October, November and late February for light and greenery, or May for lakeside action. For value choose June or the buffer-zone monsoon months. Whatever the month, two or three safaris beat one, because zone allocation and weather vary day to day.
