Ranthambore tour from Udaipur

Ranthambore Tour from Udaipur

Udaipur and Ranthambore sit at opposite ends of a full day on the road, which makes them a natural pair for a Rajasthan lakes-and-tigers trip. The drive passes Chittorgarh and Bundi or Kota, all worth a stop. This page covers the road and rail options and how we fit the safaris around a long transfer.

Udaipur to Ranthambore by Road

The drive is approximately 390 to 400 km and takes the better part of a day, roughly 7 to 8 hours with stops. The usual route runs via Chittorgarh and then either Bundi or Kota before reaching Sawai Madhopur. Leave Udaipur early, break for lunch at Chittorgarh or Bundi, and aim to reach the hotel by late afternoon. We do not recommend a safari on the same day as this drive; start fresh with the next morning slot instead.

Udaipur to Ranthambore by Train

Rail options run via Kota. Some services connect Udaipur toward Kota, and from Kota there are trains onward to Sawai Madhopur, approximately 110 km further. Direct connections are limited and timings change, so check current schedules before you fix hotel dates. If the onward connection is awkward, our car can collect you at Kota and cover the last stretch by road in roughly 2 to 2.5 hours.

Stops Along the Way

The drive is more enjoyable if you treat it as part of the trip. Chittorgarh Fort is one of the largest hill forts in India and needs at least two hours. Bundi has a painted palace, step-wells and a slower pace, and makes a good lunch or even overnight halt. Kota is the larger city with the better road links. If you have a spare night, stopping at Bundi or Chittorgarh turns a long drive into a heritage day.

Suggested Day-by-Day Plan

Day 1: drive Udaipur to Sawai Madhopur via Chittorgarh, with a lunch stop, check in by late afternoon. Day 2: morning safari, rest, evening safari. Day 3: morning safari, then Ranthambore Fort or the lakes, and a third night if you want a relaxed evening. Day 4: breakfast and the return drive, or continue to Jaipur, which is approximately 160 to 180 km and about 3 to 3.5 hours by road, to fly out or see the city.

Combine with Kumbhalgarh or Chittorgarh

Many guests come to us from a Udaipur circuit that already includes Kumbhalgarh Fort, approximately 85 km north of Udaipur. The natural flow is Udaipur, Kumbhalgarh, back through Udaipur or across to Chittorgarh, then on to Ranthambore, and finally Jaipur. That gives you lakes, two great forts, tigers and the pink city in a week. We can quote just the Ranthambore leg or coordinate with your Udaipur operator on the transfer.

Safaris, Permits and Package Inclusions

Each safari is a separate permit from the forest department, with zones allocated at booking. Two permits suit a two-night stay and three suit three nights. Shared jeep seats are approximately Rs 2,200 to 2,500 per Indian visitor and canter seats approximately Rs 1,500 to 1,600, subject to revision. Our package covers the hotel, the permits and vehicle, hotel-to-gate transfers, and the car from Udaipur or Kota if you want it. No sighting is guaranteed. Pricing is quoted on enquiry.

Best Months and Cost Drivers

October to March is the pleasant window for both the drive and the safaris. April and May are hot on the road but often good in the park. The park core is closed in the monsoon. The main cost drivers from Udaipur are the car hire for the long transfer, hotel category, jeep versus canter, and the number of safaris. Sharing the car across a group of four brings the transfer cost down considerably.
