Ranthambore zone 1

Ranthambore Zone 1: Singh Dwar and Sultanpur

Zone 1 is the hilly, edge-of-the-park zone entered through the Singh Dwar gate, covering the Tala and Sultanpur side. It sits between the core lakes area and the buffer beyond, and in recent seasons it has produced strong sightings, most of them linked to Noor (T-39) and her cubs. This page covers the gate, the terrain, the tigers reported here and how we go about requesting it.

Landscape and Route

Zone 1 climbs from the Singh Dwar gate into broken, hilly country that feels different from the flat lakes side. The tracks wind through dhok forest and rocky nallas towards Tala, Sultanpur, Amreshwar Dang and Gada Dub, with a few small waterholes such as Peela Pani and Tuti ka Nalla that matter a lot in the dry months. Sightlines are shorter than in zone 3, so sightings here tend to be close and sudden rather than across open water. The route loops back to the same gate.

Entry Gate and Drive Time From Hotels

Zone 1 vehicles enter at Singh Dwar, on the same Sherpur side of the park that serves the other core zones, so it is one of the easier zones to reach from most Ranthambore Road hotels. From the main hotel stretch the drive to the gate is usually 15 to 25 minutes. Pickup happens roughly an hour before the slot opens to allow for collecting other guests and the ID check at the gate. Hotels in Sawai Madhopur town or on the Kundera side need a little longer.

Tigers and Other Wildlife

Zone 1 has been Noor country in recent seasons. Noor (T-39) has raised several litters on this side and her cubs are the sightings most guides talk about here. Before her, the zone was associated with Ustad (T-24), who was moved out of the park in 2015. Other tigers pass through from zone 6 and the buffer. Away from tigers, expect sambar, chital, nilgai, langur, the occasional sloth bear on the rocky slopes and good raptors. Treat every named tiger as reported, not promised.

Best Season and Slot

Zone 1 is a core zone, so it follows the main season and closes from 1 July to 30 September. October to February is the comfortable time, with green cover after the rains and cool mornings. March to June is hotter but the waterholes concentrate animal movement, which is when zone 1 has produced many of its best sightings. Both morning and evening slots work. Mornings suit the hilly light; evenings put the sun behind you on the return leg.

Jeep or Canter Suitability

Both jeeps and canters run into zone 1, and the tracks are in reasonable condition. Because the terrain is hilly and sightings often happen at short range in cover, a jeep is the better choice for photographers and for anyone who wants to stop and wait quietly at a waterhole. A canter is fine for a family or a group on a budget and gives a higher viewpoint over the scrub. Whichever you pick, the gate and the timings are the same.

How to Request Zone 1

Tell us you want zone 1 when you send your booking request and we will put it on the permit application. Zone allocation is done by the forest department permit system, which distributes vehicles across the park, so we can request but not guarantee it. Booking early helps, as does booking more than one safari so we can spread requests across zones and slots. If zone 1 has been quiet in the recent reports we will say so and suggest an alternative.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which gate is used for Ranthambore zone 1?

Singh Dwar, on the Sherpur side of the park, close to the gates used by the other core zones. Gate arrangements are set by the forest department and can change by notification, so we confirm the gate on your permit.

Is zone 1 good for tiger sighting?

In recent seasons, yes, largely because of Noor and her cubs. Sightings are reported regularly but never guaranteed. We check the last two or three weeks of reports before recommending it.

Which tigers are in zone 1?

Noor (T-39) and her offspring are the tigers most associated with zone 1. Ustad (T-24) held this side until 2015. Other tigers move in from zone 6 and the buffer, so treat any list as a snapshot.

How far is the zone 1 gate from the hotels?

Usually 15 to 25 minutes from the Ranthambore Road hotel stretch. We fix pickup around an hour before the slot so there is time for the gate check.

Is zone 1 open in the monsoon?

No. Zone 1 is a core zone and closes from 1 July to 30 September along with zones 2 to 5. The buffer zones 6 to 10 have been kept open in the monsoon in recent seasons.
