Ranthambore zone 9

Ranthambore Zone 9: Kuwalji

Zone 9 is Kuwalji, the river zone on the Chambal side of the reserve, about 45 minutes from Sawai Madhopur and well away from the main park. Its landscape is riverbank, ravine and scrub around the Chakal and the Banas drainage, and it is known for reported male tigers, caracal and excellent waterbirds. This page covers the drive, the gate and when it is worth the trip.

Landscape and Route

Kuwalji is unlike any other zone. The track follows the Chakal river and the ravine country that drains towards the Banas and the Chambal, with sandy banks, reed beds, rocky bluffs and open scrub instead of the closed dhok forest of the core. There are long views along the water and plenty of places to stop. The drive is as much about the river as about tigers: crocodiles on the sand, turtles, and birds everywhere. It is a landscape that rewards a slow drive and a good pair of binoculars.

Entry Gate and Drive Time From Hotels

Zone 9 has its own gate on the Kuwalji side, roughly 45 minutes by road from Sawai Madhopur and further from the Ranthambore Road hotels, so this is the earliest pickup of any zone. For a morning slot we usually collect guests an hour and a half or more before opening. The road passes through farmland and villages rather than forest, and we use it as part of the outing. The forest department sets the gate and may adjust it, so we confirm when the permit issues.

Tigers and Other Wildlife

Kuwalji is reported to hold male tigers that range along the river, with Fateh (T-42) and T-59 among those linked to this side in some seasons. Males with big ranges can be absent for weeks, so we treat sightings here as a bonus, not the point of the trip. The point is the rest: caracal, a rare and secretive cat reported more often here than anywhere else in the reserve, sloth bear, marsh crocodile, and a bird list that includes storks, herons, ducks, skimmers in season, kingfishers and raptors along the bluffs.

Best Season and Slot

Zone 9 is a buffer zone and has been kept open in the monsoon in recent seasons, while core zones 1 to 5 close from 1 July to 30 September. November to February is the time for birds, when migratory ducks and waders are on the river and the weather is cool. Summer is hot on the open banks but the river draws animals in. Morning is the slot we recommend for birds and for the light on the water; evening is good for photography if you are comfortable with a late return.

Jeep or Canter Suitability

Zone 9 is a jeep zone. Canters are not usually allotted to Kuwalji, the tracks along the river and through the ravines suit a small vehicle, and the whole appeal is stopping often for birds and scanning the banks, which a jeep does well. Bring binoculars and a longer lens if you have one. It is a good choice for birders, photographers and repeat visitors who have seen the lakes and want something different; less so for a first-time guest whose main aim is a tiger.

How to Request Zone 9

Ask for zone 9 when you book and we will put it on the permit application. Allocation is by the forest department permit system and cannot be guaranteed, though Kuwalji is rarely oversubscribed. Because of the drive, we recommend it as a full outing rather than squeezed between other plans, and it works well as a second or third safari or a monsoon drive. We will set the early pickup and tell you what the river has been producing in recent reports.
