Ranthambore zone 3

Ranthambore Zone 3: Padam Talao and the Lakes

Zone 3 is the lakes zone and the most requested zone in Ranthambore. It takes in Padam Talao, Raj Bagh Talao, Jogi Mahal and the Mandook side, with the fort on the cliff above. This was Machali's old territory and it is now held by Arrowhead's line, with Riddhi (T-124) reported dominant in recent seasons. Below is how it works in practice.

Landscape and Route

The zone 3 route runs from the gate past Jogi Mahal along the shore of Padam Talao, the largest lake, then on to Raj Bagh Talao and its ruins and out towards Mandook. The banks are open, so you can see a long way across water and grass, which is why the lakes give the classic Ranthambore picture of a tiger walking the shoreline with the fort behind. Sambar wade in the shallows, crocodiles line the banks and the ruins give the whole drive its atmosphere.

Entry Gate and Drive Time From Hotels

Zone 3 enters through the main gate on the Sherpur side, the shared entry for zones 2 to 5, and is one of the closest zones to the Ranthambore Road hotels. The drive is generally 10 to 20 minutes, a little more from Sawai Madhopur town. We pick up about an hour before the slot opens. The lakes are only a few minutes inside the gate, so on a zone 3 permit you are at the water within the first quarter hour of the drive.

Tigers and Other Wildlife

The lakes have been held by one female line for decades: Machali (T-16), then her daughter Krishna (T-19), then Arrowhead (T-84), and in recent seasons Arrowhead's daughter Riddhi (T-124) is reported as the dominant tigress. Males pass through and cubs come and go, so ask us what the current reports say. Beyond tigers, the lakes are the best place in the park for marsh crocodiles, sambar in the water, and waterbirds, with painted storks, kingfishers and raptors on the dead trees.

Best Season and Slot

Zone 3 is a core zone and closes from 1 July to 30 September. October to February gives full lakes, mist at dawn and comfortable temperatures. From April to June the water shrinks and tigers come to the lakes to drink and cool off, which is when the famous lakeside sightings happen. The first hour of the morning slot is the pick for light and mist. Evenings are warmer and put the fort in shadow earlier, but summer evenings can be excellent for tigers at the water.

Jeep or Canter Suitability

Zone 3 is comfortable for both jeeps and canters. The lakeside tracks are wide and flat, and a canter's height gives a good view across the water, so families and larger groups lose little by choosing one. A jeep is better if you want to hold a position at a corner of Raj Bagh while others move on, or if you are photographing and need to change angle quickly. Demand for zone 3 jeeps is the highest in the park, so book early.

How to Request Zone 3

Name zone 3 as your preference and we will put it on the permit request. Allocation is by the forest department permit system, which shares vehicles across all zones, and zone 3 is the one everyone asks for, so we cannot promise it. The realistic approach is to book two or more safaris, request zone 3 on one and an active alternative on another. If you are set on the lakes, tell us and we will book as early as the permit window allows.
