Taj Mahal with Ranthambore tour

Taj Mahal with Ranthambore Tour

Agra and Ranthambore are linked by a direct rail line, which makes the Taj Mahal and a tiger safari one of the easiest short combinations in north India. Three to four days is enough for a sunrise at the Taj and two or three safaris. This page sets out the route, the train leg and how the permits fit.

Route Overview

Start in Agra, ideally arriving the evening before so the Taj can be done at sunrise. After the visit, take a train from Agra through Bharatpur to Sawai Madhopur, roughly 4 to 5 hours, or drive approximately 280 km in 5 to 6 hours. Spend two nights in Ranthambore, then return to Agra, continue to Jaipur, approximately 160 to 180 km, or take a train to Delhi, approximately 380 km. The order can be reversed if your flights favour Jaipur.

The Taj Mahal at Sunrise

The Taj opens before sunrise and the first hour is the quietest and coolest. Remember it is closed on Fridays, so a Friday in Agra means seeing the monument on Thursday evening or Saturday morning instead. Agra Fort and Mehtab Bagh across the river fill the rest of a half-day. Our advice is to sleep in Agra the night before, see the Taj early, have breakfast, and be on the late-morning train to Sawai Madhopur.

Day-by-Day Plan

Day 1: arrive Agra, Agra Fort in the afternoon, sunset view of the Taj from Mehtab Bagh. Day 2: Taj Mahal at sunrise, train to Sawai Madhopur, check in, evening safari if the timing allows. Day 3: morning safari, rest, evening safari. Day 4: morning safari, Ranthambore Fort, then onward to Jaipur or back toward Agra and Delhi. Three days is possible by dropping the Agra Fort afternoon and taking only two safaris.

How the Safari Permits Fit

Safari permits are issued by the forest department for a fixed date and slot, with zones allocated at booking. We book them once your Agra train is confirmed, so the arrival-day evening safari is only planned if the train reaches in time. Two nights in the park normally gives you three safaris. Shared jeep seats are approximately Rs 2,200 to 2,500 per Indian visitor and canter seats approximately Rs 1,500 to 1,600, subject to revision. No safari guarantees a tiger.

Best Season

October to March suits both halves of the trip. Agra is pleasant for walking and the park mornings are crisp; December and January can be foggy in Agra, which sometimes delays trains and hides the sunrise, so allow a little slack. April and May are hot in Agra but often good for sightings around water in the park. The park core closes for the monsoon, so July to September is Agra only.

What Is Included on Enquiry

A quote from us for this tour covers the Agra hotel, the train tickets between Agra and Sawai Madhopur, the Ranthambore hotel, safari permits and vehicles, station pickups, hotel-to-gate transfers, and a guide for the Taj if you want one. Monument tickets and meals are listed separately. We do not publish a fixed price because hotel category, group size, the number of safaris and the season all change it. Send us your dates and we send a line-item quote.

Who This Tour Suits

Travellers with three or four days who want one iconic monument and one real wildlife experience without a long circuit. It works well for couples, for families with children old enough for early starts, and as an add-on to a Delhi visit. If you have a week, the Golden Triangle with Ranthambore adds Jaipur and Delhi to the same backbone.
